Having the courage to say thank you

Since the 2016 elections, I have been thinking about America.  I have been thinking about our values.  I have been thinking about all the issues that came up during the Women’s March 2017. I have been thinking about ways to express the same type of kindness, love and support that I felt during the march.

As I am riding the metro, DC’s public subway system, on my way to a meeting I get off around the pentagon.  So I see two men in their uniforms walking ahead of me.  All of a sudden I get the great idea to walk up to them and thank them for their service.  All of a sudden I am focused on catching up to them.  I run in front of people to catch up.

When I am finally able to walk in front of them I suddenly realize I don’t have a clue what I am going to say to them.  I turn around to face them and in a very awkward way, interrupted their conversation to blurt out, “Thank you for your service!” and then shyly looked down and away.

To my complete surprise and to theirs too, they stopped their conversation, looked at me and said thank you for stopping us and we so appreciate your thanks.  Have a great weekend!

I felt so much kindness towards them.  It made me feel so good.  I’m not sure who benefitted more - me or them.  That is a sweet moment for sure!

To Your One Sweet Life,
