Kindness is contagious. Are you willing to catch it?

I was privileged enough to be part of the Women’s March in DC.  It was a wonderful experience to see women of all types coming together to give a voice to issues that affect all Americans.  Of course, whenever you have hundreds of thousands of people in confined spaces there is the possibility of tempers flaring and conflict.

One of the coolest things I witnessed during the March was that any negative comment was met with kindness. Kindness disarmed all the angry people that we encountered during the day.  It was so beautiful to watch.

There were about 30 of us that were traveling together so staying together in a crowd was a challenge.  When we finally settled in front of one of the jumbotron screens we found ourselves in front of an older lady who was miffed that we were obscuring her view.

She was clearly unhappy so I simply asked her if she wanted me to stand behind her so she could see better.  She was shocked that I thought of her comfort and she moved in front of me.  I also offered her friend to move in front of me as well. Again, she was surprised that I yielded to her comfort.  Within 15 minutes, we found out that these two ladies and my marching buddies lived in the same neighborhood in New York City.  Suddenly their scowls turned into smiles and they softened into lovely people who engaged us as for the rest of the march.

The message I learn over and over again: when you can be kind and find a point of connection, any situation can be changed for the good.
